Painful hips can make even the simplest of activities difficult and unpleasant for your pet. In some instances, therapy and medication may be sufficient for managing hip pain. When this ceases to be the case, we may recommend a procedure known as femoral head ostectomy (FHO), which can help to restore pain-free mobility.
Some hip conditions that can benefit from FHO surgery include:
- Hip fractures
- Joint dislocation (luxation)
- Severe arthritis
- Hip dysplasia
- Weak muscles in hind legs
- Legg-Perthes disease
Some of the signs of a potential hip problem include, but are not limited to:
- Limping when walking
- Stiffness in joints
- Difficulty/pain when getting up or sitting/laying down
- Decreased tolerance or motivation to exercise or play
